Sloping Ceiling Kitchen

Effective Design of a Difficult

Sloping Ceiling Kitchen Space

A good example of sloping ceiling kitchen design. Sloping or angled ceilings can be difficult to design around as it is often difficult to make the space feel balanced.

Here we have an expansive and luxurious kitchen with breakfast bar and occasional dining table adjacent to the French doors opening to the pool and courtyard.

The decoration is a country kitchen with wash painted and paneled doors and French wash to the table.

The planted cornice to the top of the joinery keeps a strong line making the difficult angle from the roof and ceiling lose prominence.

A strong accent on color is used to bring the far wall closer while encompassing the cooking hob and oven, aiding to balance the unusually elongated room and angled ceiling plane.

Note the spaces kept for knick-knacks and the stepping of the joinery to flow with the ceiling line as it reduces in height.

The cooking hob and oven is also recessed allowing the odors and vapors to be contained with the use of the extract hidden above the recess. This focuses the work area eye and contains the vapors to a tiled and impervious surface that is relatively easy to keep clean.

The skylight allows for the use of natural daylight in what would otherwise be a large room with a single window.

The use of black as a highlight color works well to break up the long room space. The bar stools stop your eye and reduce the length of the room. The black table top also creates another visual hurdle for the eye making lots of small functional areas. It is subtly done and unless you sit down and analyze it like me you wouldn’t even notice that unusual proportions of the overall room.

The intricate painted timber moldings on the cupboard fronts also helps draw your eye down as it makes the cabinetry look heavy and detailed even tough they are painted in a pale color. I love the subtle textural differences in this sloping ceiling kitchen design and the contrast in the simplicity of the floor finish to the intricate fretwork detail of the chair backs. (Not sure about the choice of upholstery of the dining chairs, I think that it detracts slightly from the rest of the look).

Overall a kitchen design that has taken a great deal of time to prepare thinking about how you would see the room from different angles and also how it would be used efficiently.

There is still a walkway through the space to the outdoors without encroaching on the kitchen space.

I think that it is a functional use of a difficult space with a sloping or angled ceiling, and the kitchen is designed with great intricate detail.
