Curtain Pelmet Ideas

Curtain Pelmet Ideas and Photographs

Pelmets are a simple way to keep your curtain heading hidden.

They are ideal for stopping that stray ray of light that comes through from the top of the curtain track in your bedroom window, and a simple way to make over an existing curtain. they provide a neat and tailored look to a window.

There are numerous variations, so take a look at the photograph examples below and see if you can get some ideas on using pelmets in your curtain design.

Molded Bulkhead acts as Curtain Pelmet

Molded Bulkhead acts as Curtain Pelmet

This lovely detailed ceiling has a bulkhead which acts as a pelmet for the curtains.

As you can see this curved room could be a difficult room to treat with curtains, but the designer has decided to treat the room as one window and use a ceiling mounted track and a ceiling bulkhead which leaves enough space for the curtains to run around the outside edge of the room between the wall and the ceiling bulkhead.

This way the french doors are left unadorned during the day and at night the entire curtain can be pulled around the wall creating one long and continuous curtain wall.

Upholstered Curtain Pelmet

Upholstered Curtain Pelmet

This simple upholstered pelmet is used here in this hotel to ensure that not a drop of daylight enters in the morning to wake the guest before they want to. It is upholstered in a simple fabric, the same as the curtain and is not a design feature of the room but a functional feature.

Fixed Wall Pelmet

Fixed Wall Pelmet

One way to create a curtain pelmet is to use one continuous board fixed to the ceiling. This creates a modern look and feel to the room. It is painted the same color as the wall here and the curtain track sits behind.

In this example it provides a more elegant curtain and makes the window appear larger than it is rather than creating a single pelmet over the window and designating the actual size of it.

Continuous Ceiling Cornice as a Curtain Pelmet

Continuous Ceiling Cornice as a Curtain Pelmet

This room design has used a molded cornice to the ceiling to create a continuous pelmet around the room. The curtain sits behind it neatly on a double track as there are sheers and curtains.

Using the pelmet system removes the need for us to look at the curtain track or rod, which can sometimes date a room. This way the design looks traditional and timeless.

Padded Upholstered Pelmet

Padded Upholstered Pelmet

Sometimes pelmets can be a focal point of the room.

This padded and upholstered pelmet is large and heavy and lowers the appearance of height of the room.

It is an different fabric to the curtains and quite frankly, I think the curtains get lost in this example, but the pelmet is certainly one of the main focal points of the room.

Scalloped Hem Pelmet

Scalloped Hem Pelmet

This is how using a pelmet can make a window and room appear larger than it actually is.

The scalloped hem fabric pelmet shown here goes from wall to wall and the curtains the same.

This creates the illusion of a large window and bigger room as there is no stopping and starting of curtains.
