Jalousie Window: Similar in movement to a Venetian blind the window is comprised of horizontal strips of glass that move in unison to allow ventilation.
Jamb: The side of a door or window.
Japanning: A type of varnishing . It was to imitate the lacquering work from the east. It was used from the 1660’s. Initially it was produced by using heat hardened spirit based varnishes and as oil based became available they were used.
Jardiniere: A pedestal type table used to support or display a potted plant or flower arrangement.
Jaspe: (wallcovering) printed linear veins of inter mingling colors.
Jaspe Cloth: Sturdy fabric with woven textural striped effect in muted colors.
Jettie: (or Jutty) a part of a building that projects beyond the rest and overhangs the wall below eg bay windows, small turrets at the corner of buildings. Also a wharf or pier projecting into water.
Jib Door:A door that is flush with the wall and of the same finish as the wall so that its inconspicuous or almost invisible.
Joggle: A term used by stone masons relating to fitting stones together as a carpenter would use a rebate when fitting timber together. Also a small projection at the end of a mortised piece to strengthen it e.g. a stub tenon.
Joiner: a person who makes joinery usually at a bench in a controlled environment allowing their work to be much finer than that of a carpenter.
Joinery: Is the art or trade of a person who assembles wood constructions. The making and fixing of wooden finishes to a building, eg the windows and doors. It’s the finishing carpentry and also includes some cabinetry however it is not to be confused with cabinet making which is the construction of fine furniture. It can also be used as a term for the connections that secure woodwork. Methods of jointing, dovetailing, mortise and tenon and dowel. Also used as a term for interior fitted furniture.
Joint: The space between the stones or bricks in masonry filled with grout are called joints.
Joint Shrinkage: (wallcovering) Where the joints open after drying, this is caused by insufficient smoothing of the paper.
Joist: A wooden or steel beam that supports a floor or ceiling. There will always be a number of them in parallel as a framing system. A Steel joist may often be called a RSJ or rolled steel joist.
Jube: The gallery over the entrance to the choir (the part of a church east of the nave in which the services were celebrated) is called in France and sometimes England the Jube.
Jute: (textiles)A plant fiber of coarse and rough character. Burlap is the most useful product. Hessian.
